Reviews (may contain plot spoilers!):
I read the first book in this series by Paula Vince, ‘The Risky Way Home’ in no time at all; I loved it and couldn’t wait for the sequel ‘A Design of Gold’. I was certainly not disappointed.
‘A Design of Gold’ begins with a family tragedy that tears 2 families apart and sends the main character Nicola away from her home. She ends up boarding with the Bowman family who were the main characters in ‘The Risky Way Home’. Jerome Bowman is now 19 and much of this new story is about him; the friendships he forms and issues he is dealing with.
Jerome Bowman is a really nice young man who loves God with all his heart and has his future set on mission work. Jerome’s way of thinking has been challenged by a book called ‘Distributing Heaven’ and he is desperately searching for the sequel, ‘A Design of Gold’. These books were written by a mission minded gentleman who has inspired Jerome’s life significantly.
In his search, Jerome learns much about himself and the people closest to him. He is challenged and changed which I also found a challenge and encouragement to my own life.
Paula Vince writes in such a wonderful way. Her style is so easy to read. There are some quite stressful moments through the book and a beautiful love story that also unfolds. I fell in love with Vince’s characters and was moved by their hurts and their triumphs too. I found myself relating to the character Nicola who is about 10 kilo’s overweight and struggles with self image which is something that I frequently grapple with. I love the journey that Nicola travels to self acceptance.
Some of the main themes that spoke to me through reading ‘A Design of Gold’ were the need to think more positively about the things in my life and to be constantly thankful to God for the blessings that he gives. I was also encouraged to be more outward looking – to find ways that I can bless the lives of others around me through random acts of kindness. Blessing others can be just as significant with small acts, we don’t always have to make big gestures to leave lasting impact.
I loved ‘A Design of Gold’. It was absolutely enjoyable but has also left a lasting blessing in my life. I would highly recommend this novel to my circle of family and friends. Thank you Paula.
